NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his office in Parliament. The development came weeks after the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a resounding defeat in Maharashtra’s recent assembly elections to the BJP-led MahaYuti alliance.spinph

Pawar was accompanied by two farmers from Phaltan in western Maharashtra, who presented the Prime Minister with a box of pomegranates from their farm.

While the political backdrop of the meeting is notable, Pawar insisted that there was no political discussion during the visit. "They did not have political discussions," he stated.

Pawar had recently written to Modi inviting him to inaugurate the 98th Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, scheduled to be held at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi in February, but he did not raise the topic during his meeting with the Prime Minister.

The MVA, a coalition of Congress, NCP(SP), and Shiv Sena(UBT), faced a humiliating defeat in last month’s Maharashtra assembly elections. The MahaYuti alliance, comprising BJP and Shiv Sena-NCP, secured a commanding victory with 235 seats, while the MVA was limited to just 46 in the 288-member assembly.

This defeat has significantly impacted the political atmosphere in the state, leading to recent high-profile meetings.

Earlier on Tuesday, Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nagpur, marking their first meeting since the elections. Thackeray’s son, Aaditya Thackeray, who accompanied his father, expressed that the meeting was a positive step towards cooperation.

"Our party chief met the chief minister and Assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar today. What we have done is a step forward...that both sides show political maturity and work together in the interests of Maharashtra," said Aaditya Thackeray, adding that, despite being in opposition, his party was committed to collaborating for the betterment of the state.

"Our party chief, Uddhav Thackeray, met Chief Minister Fadnavis and Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar today. What we have done is a step forward. Both sides should show political maturity and work together in the interest of Maharashtra and the country. We may be in the Opposition, and they may be in the ruling coalition, but we are all elected representatives of the people. The ruling parties should also listen to us, which could lead to positive outcomes," news daily Lokmat has quoted Aaditya Thackeray as saying.
