The fires, fanned by Santa Ana winds reaching speeds over 60 mph, have made firefighting efforts difficult. These winds, which are expected to intensify overnight, have also caused widespread power outages, with nearly 167,000 people without power across Los Angeles County.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency as the fires continue to spread. The flames have already reached Malibu, and several people are receiving treatment for burn injuries, including a firefighter who sustained a serious head injury. Newsom has warned that the worst of the winds is still expected to come, with gusts potentially exceeding 100 mph in some regions.
